Want to buy Patriots season tickets? It takes nearly 20 years on a waitlist

Here’s some good news: A select few New England Patriots fans are finally getting their chance to purchase season tickets after years on the waitlist.

Here’s the bad news: When they signed up for the waitlist, Mac Jones was five years old and “Friends” was still on the air.

This comes from a Boston Globe report that delves into the much-speculated topic of how long it takes for fans to land season tickets at Gillette Stadium. The answer: A long, long time, 19 years at the current rate. Back in 2019, it was 20 years, according to NBC Boston.

“I do believe those who joined the wait list in 2003 became eligible this year,” Patriots spokesman Stacey James told the Globe.

Meanwhile, firsthand accounts from fans Reddit and message boards indicate that it’s taken the team at least two years to offer season ticket spots to fans who signed up during the 2003 season.

The Globe spoke to a number of fans who had finally landed season tickets after years of waiting. However, the wait was so long that many fans found themselves in much different situations in their lives compared to the moment they signed up in the early 2000s, when Tom Brady was still a 26-year-old quarterback trying to prove the 2001 Super Bowl run wasn’t a fluke.

Getting a call from the Patriots was jarring for some fans who have waited 19 years, with some thinking it was a scam or prank. Others grappled with the decision of whether they suddenly wanted to drop $3,000 for four season tickets now that they were available. (Spoiler alert: They did.)

The Globe also confirmed that, no, season ticket spots aren’t opener up much now that Brady has left the Patriots, with 98.5% of fans renewing for 2022, per the Globe.

“Only 480 new season tickets have been issued since 2019,” James said to the Globe. “But the wait list has grown by 6,258 season tickets since then.”

That’s a much more imposing timeline than the vague outlook the Patriots give on their website’s season tickets page.

“Ticket availability is based on the renewal rates of existing Season Ticket Members,” the Patriots say on their website.

In addition to the high price tag for season tickets, being on the waitlist costs a $100 deposit. However, that deposit entitles fans to some special perks as well.

Fans on the waitlist get a 10% discount for online purchases at the Patriots ProShop as well as special ticket presales and invitations to the draft party and away game watch parties.
